July Serenade

"July Serenade," by Ryan Mellody

By Bridget Manzella

“July Serenade,” by Ryan Mellody, awakens senses to the auditory delights of an acoustic guitar. What could be lovelier than lying in the shade of a tree listening to the sounds of summer blending with song? What “melody” do you hear when you look at this painting? For myself, I hear all of those great summer classics that return each year as surely as higher temperatures.

The following are some of the most popular summer classics from the 60s as listed in the top 30 “Summer Songs of All Time” according to billboard.com.

“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini” Bryan Hyland 1960. Click here for a link to the song lyrics.

“Surf City” Jan & Dean 1963. Click here for a link to the song lyrics.

“Under The Boardwalk” The Drifters 1964. Click here for a link to the song lyrics.

“California Girls” The Beach Boys 1965. Click here for a link to the song lyrics. The Following is a video clip of the beach boys performing “California Girls”:

Music is a great way to capture a time period, as are paintings. “July Serenade” captures the essence of summer music and of the summers of our past.
